University-Model High School for the Liberated Youth
Did you know that George Washington Carver was the local “plant doctor” before he turned 13? Or that George Washington was a land surveyor in his teenage years? Or that Laura Ingalls Wilder began her teaching career prior to her 16th birthday? These teens were not much different than ours today. They were passionate about something, yet they had the freedom to pursue their passion.

 You’ve been hearing a lot from us about…the Makarios Path to Self-Directed Learning...How we Approach Education at Makarios…breaking the Repetition Cycle so often found in traditional education...and the similarities between Finland’s top-ranking education system and Democratic Free schools. And these are all great examples of this model’s success, but what about the high school student that has struck out on their own, or (gasp!) dropped-out of school?

Along the way we have shared many examples of what our education model “looks” like while attempting to answer a few of the “buts” that we hear from parents.  What we realize is that families explore alternatives to traditional education for a variety of reasons. One of our first promotional postcards begged the question: “Bright, bullied, bored?” And yes, all three are student types that have been served in our school. But (here’s another of those buts), what about the high school student that has struck out on their own. They know what they want to do, some have taken responsibility for their education, many are achieving their goals, and all have liberated themselves from the constraints of traditional education.

At Makarios we recognize this not-so-new breed of teens and are launching a University-Model program tailored to their participation and the imprint they want to make on the world around them. High School level courses will allow students to complete a year’s worth of credit in one semester. Our model is not cram and test, but rather a Socratic-style environment full of interesting lectures, discussion, and application designed to fulfill transcript requirements.
